 HPA COVID-19 Update

The Covid-19 situation continues to evolve rapidly and is creating a worrying situation for all of us, with the uncertain economic times ahead. During this time our priority must be to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the sport and for the HPA to give as much guidance as possible to clubs and members in response to the Government’s guidance as it develops in the coming weeks.

The HPA has a duty during these challenging times to try to protect the fabric of the sport and the polo community which stretches well beyond just clubs and players. We will continue to work hard to keep open our ability to play this season and will update clubs and members further as we get nearer to 1st May.

In the meantime, we need to take some significant action with regard to our immediate running costs and overheads, circumstances that many clubs and members are also facing at this time. We can anticipate significant reductions in income for the current year and some uncertainty as to how this will recover in future seasons. In particular, we expect our sponsorship and licensing income to be dramatically lower this year, with the challenge of rebuilding this income stream in future years and income from passports, migrant endorsements, coaching and umpiring are assumed to be dramatically reduced or minimal in the current year.

The largest cost over which we have control relates to the people employment costs, which we have halved. David, Olly and Lucy have agreed to a 40% reduction in annual salary as the skeleton office team so that we can field enquires and provide support, and Looby, Will and Caroline are furloughed on the government scheme from 1st April. In addition, outstanding discretionary expenditure is on hold for the current year and we have reduced the budget for administrative costs in all possible areas.

As a result of these actions to reduce costs and expenditure in both commercial and governance and a conservative view on income, we anticipate an overall loss for the current year. We will continue to work towards reducing further discretionary expenditure in the coming weeks and a further cutting of costs may be required.

We fully recognise these are challenging and uncertain times for everyone in the sport, including for the clubs as they consider maintenance of grounds, running costs and their staff. To function even at a much reduced level the HPA and clubs still require some level of income. The HPA is very grateful to those who have paid already but so that the fabric of the sport can survive through this crisis we would ask members to support their clubs at this time and both clubs and members to pay their club affiliation fees and membership annual subscriptions as soon as they are able.

It is too early to judge the longer term consequences for both commercial and governance activities, and the impact on our sport, but we will be reviewing carefully our future structure and overheads, balancing the needs of our clubs and members and our responsibilities as the governing body with our ability to fund these activities.

The TRI SERVICE -5 Goal Tournament at Tidworth Polo Club

In order from left to right - Maj Olivia Allenby-Dilley RAMC, Private Mollie Darwin QARANC, Craftsman Dale Gordon REME, Maj Luke Wadman RA being presented their Hackett British Army Polo shirts by Director of Army Polo Col. Simon Ledger.
THE RN/RAF/Army -4 Goal Tournament

The first Tri Service -4 goal touranament took place at TPC on Sat 3rd July. This is designed for development players to go up a gear and get used to tournament play at a faster pace. Thus

1. Pte Mollie Darwin QARANC -2
2. Maj Olivia Allenby-Dilley RAMC -1
3. Craftsman Dale Gordon REME -2
4. Maj Luke Wadman RA -1

were all awarded their Army Colours as a prelude to the match. None of them had played together before and found the first match against a settled RAF team difficult to get into, they quickly adjusted though and scored 2 goals off the stick of Olivia Allenby Dilley but not enough to secure the win, 2 points then to the RAF. Their next match against the RN was much better and they scored 3 good goals especially noteworthy was the 60 yd penalty by Luke Wdaman and a fine run by Dale Gordon, 2 points to the HACKETT Army side for their win by just 1/2 goal. Thus all teams were on 2 points each and it went to the RN on goal difference. This tournament as an experiment was hugely successful and will be repeated”.

March 2019
McCreery Military Handicap Hurdle at Wincanton on Sunday 14th April
The Army University Officer Training Corps Polo Challenge at Druids Lodge Polo Club

As the Arena Polo comes to an end, Druids Lodge Polo Club held the annual Army UOTC Polo Challenge on 19 & 20 Apr. With 7 teams competing from 4 UOTC’s (from about a dozen different Universities) from all over the country, this event demonstrates the emphasis the Army still places on polo, 150 years after first introducing polo to the UK.

With training completed on Tuesday and the competitive element, split in two leagues, held on Wednesday under the experienced eye of HPA licensed Coach, and ex-cavalry officer, Giles Ormerod, this was an excellent opportunity for those who have shown interest in the Army to meet, chat and experience what military polo can offer. With almost 80% of the 23 intending to join the Regular and Reserve Army, polo remains the draw it always has been for those intending to serve.

Exeter UOTC, after some years out, won ‘League A’ in a convincing manner and Oxford UOTC proved too strong in ‘League B’.  With the format set and proven this mini Challenge competition, supported by the Army, Army Reserve and the respective UOTC’s alike remains an important staging post in a sport synonymous with the military. Role on the summer!
CIRENCESTER PARK POLO CLUB

Army Players that wish to know more are to inform the Director of the APOLOA who will connect those interested with the Manager, Tom Meyrick.”

Festival of Equitation Exhibition Match - RAF Cranwell vs Army Reserve

For the third year running the RAF Cranwell Polo Club hosted a match as part of the RAF Festival of Equitation, with a -3 Army Reserve side (Brigadier Simon Goldstein, Major Will Mawby, Captain Dan von Barloewen and Mrs Amy Mawby) against a -6 RAF Cranwell side (Flt Lt Georgie Harwood, Mr Rob Shearman, and Flt Lt Sara Darby) for a fast, open and friendly game.  The Army Reserve levelled the handicap with two quick goals but then the RAF came back, with the score increasing tit-for-tat to finally finish a narrow 7-6 in the Army Reserve’s favour, making the series 2-1 to the RAF.

The match marks the last UK based game for the British Army for 2018. What a season it’s been.

Captains and Subalterns Polo Tournament, Tidworth Polo Club. Images © Peter Meade

24 Teams were originally entered for this 2 day Tournament at TPC over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd July. Ground pressure and the weather meant the tournament director and team from the TPC reduced that to 19 and some matches to 3 chukkas to ease the pony providers concerns. Polo started at 10 every day with the Finals on the Sunday at 5 PM. All ponies were sound and hirers content afater some excellent polo at all levels. Jess and Chris Andrews and their excellent organisation somehow coordinated the two 2 days to time and the Final was as exciting as ever with the KIngs Royal Hussars(KRH) bowing to the superior Queens Royal Hussars(QRH) by 3 goal to 7.”

Results:

Division 1: Played over 2 days with 3 chukkas per day. A pulsating encounter with 4 members of the HACKETT Army Team spread in both teams. The first day of 3 chukkas saw the KRH hold the seemigly superior QRH team with some strong play by Paddy Selfe and despite going behind at the end of the 3rd the KRH with Alex Walch playing well above his handicap the momentum was with them. The second day saw a difference with the QRH who marked Paddy Selfe out  and with Johnny Sleeman combining well with Jamie Fry they crept further ahead in the 5th by 5 goals to 3. Both teams had settled and some bad luck by Walch saw him go wide and with Max Morant finding his range having been away fro 4 years the QRH won the final in front of a large crowd by 7 to 3. Alex walch won the Ledger MVP Cup for consistent skill over the 2 days.

1. Lt Jamie Drummond-Moray Scots Gds +1
2. Lt Johnny Sleeman Queens Royal Hussars +2
3. His Highness Prince Abdul Rahman of Johor Bahru +2
4. Mr Gaston Devrient +3

This was the first year that four teams were entered into the 8 goal Balaclava Trophy. HACKETT British Army, Sandalford, St Davids Vets and Balaclava. In the plays offs Balaclava beat St Davids Vets and Sandalford who included 5 goaler Will Emerson beat HACKETT Army.

On Finals Day Balaclava met Sandalford in a tighly fought contest but the experience of Emerson prevailed and they lifted the main Trophy.

The Subsidiary Trophy was the second match for the July Cup and HACKETT Army took on St Davids Vets:

St Davids Vets

1. Sophie Turner 0
2. Johann Spendier +1
3. Roddy Stanning +3
4. Eden Ormerod +4

This match saw a much settled HACKETT Army Team play really well in holding Ormerod and Stanning to just two goals to no reply in the first period. Words by Army Coach Gaston Devrient saw some clever play by Devrient and Prince Abdul and  3 goals quickly came to HACKETT Army in the second and thereafter in the third some excellent work by Drummond-Moray and Sleeman saw 4 goals to no reply by St Davids. Prince Abdul was particularly effective in reacting to long plays by Devrient. The last saw a renaissance by St Davids by Spendier finding the flags twice but an excellent run by Prince Abdul saw HACKETT Army prevail to lift the July Cup by 7 goals to 5.

Natasha Heelis presented the prizes. MVP went to Jeremy Pemberton of Sandalford and the POLO TIMES BPP went to Eden Ormerod’s ‘Minute’.

SASSON CUP MATCH : HACKETT ARMY v RAF

2. Lt Col Lucy Anderson RLC -1
3. Capt James Wilson RLC -1
4. Capt Paddy Selfe KRH +1
                                        -2

This match was to celebrate the 100 years of the RAF and they had high hopes of taking the Trophy with a well organised team. They got off to a very good start with two quick goals scored by Waldron and Hoogewerf. HACKETT Army took sometime to get going but then slowly, under Selfe’s guidance, began to control the game in the 2nd period but with no score. The third proved decisive with some good runs by both sides and Whitechurch particularly effective on his own ponies. A 60 yard penalty by Selfe switched the balance and with Lowe and Wilson finding their range and confidence in the 3rd but a goal behind. Despite some very strong marking by Woodhead the Army scored the vital 3rd goal with Selfe driving a goal from distance to settle the encounter by just the 1/2 goal handicap margin.

Prizes were presnted by Air Vice Marshal Andy Turner RAF and MVP awarded to Flt Lt Andy Waldron. The POLO TIMES BPP went to ‘Petufo’ ridden by Paddy Selfe from the Rob Brockett string of Dorset Polo.

A great weekend of polo played on the Ferne Ground (thanks to Lord Rothermere) which is probably the best ground in UK. The Polo was excellent in front of 250 or so spectators and thanks go the Ormerod team of Giles, Eden and Robyn as well as Polo manager Abi Vigors.

JUNE 2018

Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Polo

The second weekend of Polo at the RMAS PC took place on Saturday the 23rd June. The reports are below.

Match 1: Stowe School V RMAS

Stowe - 1. Henry Hobby -2, 2. Jamie Baillie -2, 3. Billy Hawkins-Byass -2, 4. Ivan De Poligny 0

RMAS - 1. Ocdt Tom Forstescue -2, 2. Ocdts Cecelia Carlisle/ Grayson De Villiers -2, 3. Ocdt Oli Powell +2, 4. Ocdt George Lane-Fox -2

RMAS had a tough task on their hands in taking on Stowe who were 2nd in the SUPA earlier on the month. Oli Powell, capt of RMAS Polo, did his best to marshall his beginners who only started polo under the coach JJ Spark of Greenpoint in late May. They do well and despite the Stowe handicap advantage it did not go all Stowes way. Some excellent support play by Billy Hawkins-Byass with Ivamn De Pologny driving the ball up to him saw some good goal in the second period. RMAS held on and wityh George Lane-Fox doing good work marking at back Oli Powell slipped a couple of good goals through. The second half saw Stowe build their lead with good work by Jamie Baillie and Henry Hobby marking Powell and despite the score being 61/2 to 4 for Stowe it was good polite polo. Col James Lane presented the prizes and MVPs ( by Smart Turnout) went to George Lane-Fox from RMAS and Billy Hawkins-Byass from Stowe.

Match 2: The Dame Margot Turner Challenge Trophy - Army Medical Services V RMAS PC

Army Medical Services - 1. Pte Mollie Darwin QARANC -2, 2. Maj Christophe Harper RADC -2, 3. Capt Henry Sumption RAMC -1, 4. Capt Paul Erhahiemen QARANC -2

RMAS - 1. Ocdt Charles Redshaw -2, 2. Ocdts Will Young/Robin Mackworth-Young -2, 3. Ocdt Seb Pudney 0, 4. Ocdt Jack Robertson-Mcloud -2

The first ever Dame Margot Turner Challenge Trophy was the idea of the AMS polo capt Paul Erhahiemen and a crowd of 100 or so with the help of Jean Boucton’s champage enjoyed a quite excellent polo match that despite the handicaps of both teams was played well above that level so excellent play by Henry Sumption who combined well with Christophe Harper saw some early goals by the AMS. They played well as a team generally and Molly Darwin, in her first season of polo, did excellent backhands. Paul Erhahiemen marked very well and Pudney had difficulty getting past him. With 5 goals to the good in the 3rd RMAS looked out of it but with Pudney combining well with Roberston-Mcloud and Charles Redshaw saw RMAS come right back into it and by the hell only 1/2 goal divided them and AMS lifted their trophy. Prizes were presented by The Chief Nursing Officer Alison McCourt OBE. The ‘Masta Rugs’ BPP went to Paul Erhahiemen’s Canario lead up by Fran Chappelow.
Heritage Day, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst

Heritage Day at Sandhurst produced some excellent polo between the Cadets and their guests Oxford University Polo Club and Harrow School.

Sandhurst have some very good players but two of them (Powell 2 and Camm 1) were away on duty and selections were made by Sophie Heath and JJ Spark (Greenpoint Polo) who are the coaches and pony providers for the Sandhurst PC, an excellent job they do too. Sandhurst played in HACKETT Army shirts for both games.

Harrow: 1. Norman Li -2, 2. Marc Lingren -2, 3. Michael Fitzgibbon -2, 4. Hugo Taylor +2

Sandhurst: 1. OCdts Charles Redshaw and Will Howlett -2, 2. OCdt Jack Robertson-MacLeod -2, 3. OCdt Hector Fair +1, 4. OCdt Freddie Benyon 0

Cadets had to double up to meet the challenge of two in form teams and thus at midday in front of a large crowd Harrow, who included the talented Hugo Taylor 2 , got off to a cracking start to build on their 1/2 goal advantage in the ist period by Taylor steadily advancing and scoring twice. Sandhurst rallied and neither scored in the second period despite Sandhurst camping in Harrow’s half. The vital third period saw Taylor once again making no mistakes and scored a further two goals with one in reply by the excellent Hector Fair. Teams were both marking hard and Robertson-Mcloud, in his first ever polo match, had some nice runs but was denied by the hard marking of Fitzgibbon. In the final period Taylor scored once again and Sandhurst with Benyon increasingly effective off 0 goal going very close several times. Thus a victory to Harrow by 51/2 to 1, MVPs were awarded to Michael Fitzgibbon from Harrow amd Jack Robertson-Mcloud from Sandhurst.

Oxford University Polo Club: 1. Heather Winsor -1, 2. Tim Revell -2, 3. Chris De Koning -2, 4. Charlie Hitchman +1

Sandhurst: 1. OCdt Hannah Good -2, 2. Capt Chris Pyman SCOTS DG and OCdt Tom Haines-Henderson -2, 3. OCdt Hector Fair 1, 4. OCdt Freddie Benyon 0

Oxford PC have won this encounter for the last 3 years but Sandhurst were now warmed up with Benyon and Fair playing their second match of the day. The 3 players at 1 and 2 were playing in their first ever polo match. It was end to end play by both teams with goals hard to find as the marking and play was well orchestrated by Hitchman and Fair on either side. Winsor and De Koning made several runs whilst once again some talent in Good at 1 for Sandhurst meant she was always in the play. In the third a foul presented Fair with a well taken 30 yard penalty and with some clever team play by Benyon saw Sandhurst shut down Oxford to win the match by 1 goal to a 1/2. MVP were again selected from boths sides with Heather Winsor for Oxford and Hannah Good for Sandhurst. Prizes were from British Polo Gin and Sandhurst.

Military Ladies Tournament Monday 7 May 2018 – Lt Col Anderson MBE RLC

You could not have asked for better weather than glorious sunshine and clear blue skies, that graced the May Bank Holiday. Tidworth Polo Club was the venue for the Military Ladies Tournament and the day started with three teams (AGC, H4H and RLC) entered into the tournament with an Army Ladies match taking place in the afternoon.

The AGC and H4H started off the day using the first chukka to brush off the winter cobwebs and adjust to the new rules. As the first match of the season it took the players a few minutes to get into the game with a few fouls occurring along the way. Fran Townend (H4H) got stuck in with Maj Marianne van Straaten in hot pursuit. Flt Lt Georgie Harwood had some great play closing the back door for the H4H team but the AGC came out on top with a 4-3 ½ victory. Next up was the RLC v H4H. This was the first time the RLC had managed to field a full ladies team and it was great to see them out in force. Maj Hannah Hewins and Maj Nicky Cripps were making their debut to the RLC team and put in a fine performance. The RLC had their opportunity but went wide on the 30 yd penalty. At times the game was static and a few fouls occurred but in the end neither teams scored and the H4H were victorious with their ½ goal lead.

The final of the three matches was between the AGC and RLC where the pace went up a notch. With greater open play, the game was more fluid and after a 60yd penalty that Lt Col Lucy Anderson took and Maj Nicky Cripps tapped in, the RLC took the lead. A few minutes later and with a spot taken the RLC were 2-0 in front. The AGC decided to man mark Lucy preventing her from getting the ball in open play. However, after several fouls had been called it was too costly a tactic and open play resumed. Lt Col Anderson finished the game with a beautiful under the neck shot in front of the clubhouse to settle the score 3-0. The clear winners of the tournament were the RLC but second and third could not be decided due to the AGC and H4H having equal goals for and against, so joint second was awarded to both.

With only twenty minutes between the Mil Ladies Tournament and the Army Ladies match, Lucy who was playing in both matches took on some much-needed water; temperatures had reached a glorious 24C and rehydration was key.  By 1500hrs the Army Ladies team modelling the new Army Hacket shirts were ready to face the Women In Polo (WIP) team. With formal introductions and a proper line up the teams were eager to get started. In comparison to the morning games spectators noticed the increase in pace and length of shots and the match got off to a great start with players getting stuck in right from the first whistle.

The first goal was scored by Jess Andrews taking a 60yd penalty with a clean shot straight through the goal posts. This was swiftly followed up by an open goal scored by Lucy and another one by Capt Scarlet Geering. By the end of the first chukka the Army led by 3-1. With players marking their man on both sides the game was great to watch from the side-lines. Several spectators commented on the standard of play and it was fantastic to see the Army Ladies leading the way. Lucy Anderson did a lovely open backhand shot down the boards in front of the crowds for Jess Andrews to pick up and take to goal. By the third chukka the Army led 6-3 and with the commentator’s curse applied the WIP ladies started to make a comeback with several goals being scored. By the forth chukka it was all to play for, it was neck and neck and both teams were doing their upmost to grasp the lead. With great communication Jess yelled for Janet to get out of the way so she could ride for the foul and a penalty 30 was awarded. With a calm and accurate shot Jess scored taking the Army to 7-6 ½ victory as the final whistle was blown. The Army Ladies had come close to victory being grabbed from underneath their noses, but they had held their own and came out on top!

The event was a great success with plenty of spectators enjoying the glorious bank holiday weather and supporting those on the field. Prize giving swiftly followed alongside some well-deserved refreshments. Kind thanks go to WIP for sponsoring the event and to Chris and Jess Andrews and their team for hosting a great day and for kick starting the 2018 season.

Announcement

We are sad to announce that Major Iain Forbes-Cockell, a life playing member of Guards Polo Club and a familiar face at Smith’s Lawn for more than 40 years, died suddenly last week. Known affectionately by everyone as “The Major”, Iain wore many hats at Smith’s Lawn – player, umpire, commentator and military player liaison – in addition to being an excellent writer on the sport he loved. “The Major”, a former officer in the Life Guards, was also an invaluable polo historian, with an inexhaustible fund of stories and anecdotes about the game in general and his beloved Guards Polo Club in particular.

A full tribute to him will appear in our 2018 Yearbook – a publication he regularly and excellently proofread – but every member of his Guards family send their deepest condolences to his daughters, Annabel and Emma, and the wider Forbes-Cockell family.

We will publish details of any funeral and memorial services at a later date.

Army Development Team Vs HAC Invitational Match Report

Organised by our world champion boxer and now LCpl in the RMP Steve Collins, an Army Development team played the HAC invitational team on the superb Rugby Polo Club Arena on a cold but bright Saturday 24 February.  A tightly fought game the final result was 6-5 to the Army, in an enjoyable and free flowing match.  Thanks are due to Steve and Rugby for supplying the horses, venue and umpire and with Army polo players becoming more and more spread throughout the UK this is a good value and excellently appointed club "North of Watford" that we will see more of.

Army Development Team: 1 - Pte Fran Chappelow RY, 2 - Lt Paul Erhahiemen AMS, 3 - Capt Albany Mulholland

HAC Invitational: 1 - Brig Simon Goldstein, 2 - Lt Gearoid O'Connor, 3 - Dwain Smith
